Peninsula Health is urging all members of the local community to avoid visiting friends and family in hospital if the visitor is feeling unwell, especially with flu-like symptoms.
“This is the worst flu season this decade,” says Dr Tim Williams, Peninsula Health’s Executive Director of Medical Services.
“It is vital that we do all we can to keep the patients that we have in our hospitals and rehabilitation services flu-free.”
“Some of our patients are quite unwell and therefore susceptible to contracting the flu, which could cause very serious complications for them.”
“If you are feeling unwell, please make the decision to stay at home and avoid coming in to visit anyone in our hospitals or rehabilitation services.”
The flu season is still affecting large numbers of people, but Dr Williams says there are many simple ways people can minimise their risk of contracting the virus.
“The best way to avoid the flu is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water,” says Dr Williams. “Throw tissues away straight after use, clean any frequently used surfaces and avoid sharing cups, plates and cutlery without washing.”
“If possible, everyone should consider a flu immunisation at the start of Winter each year to further increase your protection. It is still not too late to receive a flu shot now.”
Peninsula Health operates Frankston and Rosebud Hospitals, as well as rehabilitation services at The Mornington Centre and Golf Links Road in Frankston.
