The staff at Frankston Hospital went “above and beyond” to accommodate Cranbourne local Krystal Irving and her family after her daughter Sophie had an accident at home recently.
“She had an injury at home that resulted in a deep facial laceration,” explains Krystal.
“We went to the Emergency Department, I thought I was overacting but we went because we thought it was better to be safe than sorry. We were seen by the staff there and they were amazing, they immediately re-assured us that we’d done the right thing.”
The ED staff found the small cut on Sophie’s face was more than 1cm deep and required surgery.
“It looked like a hole in her face but we didn’t realise it was that deep,” says Krystal.
“That’s why she had to have the surgery, they had to put her under so they could clean it out properly and stitch it up and make sure there was absolutely no bacteria left inside.”
Sophie was moved from the ED up to the Children and Adolescent Ward in preparation for the surgery.
“Sophie was very frightened because we’d had a very negative experience at another hospital the week beforehand, so she was scared of medical staff and scared of all the equipment they had to use,” recalls Krystal.
“All the staff were so patient with her and did her observations at times when she was asleep and preoccupied so she wasn’t so distressed by it all.”
Krystal says the staff also made sure she and her husband could stay the night with Sophie. When it came time for the surgery, the staff were again there to offer support.
“I was able to stay with her right up until they were about to start surgery which was really comforting for me and for her,” says Krystal.
“When I left I was really upset and the nurses all comforted me. Then as soon as she was awake they ran and found me, told me what was going on and took me down to be with her. So it was just a really wonderful experience.”
A few weeks on, Sophie has recovered well.
“The stitches are out, there’s just a small scar that’s getting better every day but she’s happy and recovered which is good.”
“The care was exemplary and the passion and patience that was shown by all of the staff was just above and beyond,” says Krystal.
