John McQuarrie has been a volunteer in Peninsula Health’s pastoral program for a number of years.

During his time spent volunteering on the Chemo/ Oncology Day Unit at Frankston Hospital, he noticed that when patients came in for blood tests, they would often be sent home until the results were in and would then have to come back to hospital again.

That’s where he got the idea to raise money for two new special blood testing machines that give patient blood test results instantly, reducing unnecessary travel for patients and allowing patient treatment plans to be formulated more quickly.

To raise the money for this equipment, John got his fellow residents at Lifestyle Communities Hastings involved.

“The homeowners committee in partnership with the social club decided to dedicate the month of September to raise funds for the much needed equipment for cancer patients being treated at the Oncology Unit at Frankston Hospital,” said Lifestyle Communities Hastings resident Ray Nickles.

They held four events to raise money: a morning melodies with Simon Walters, a breakfast, a grand gala second chance dinner dance and a fashion parade.

“The events allowed people from all around the community to be involved,” said Ray.

Through these functions, Lifestyle Communities Hastings raised $4656 dollars. This amount was then matched dollar-for-dollar by the Lifestyle Communities Foundation, who support fundraising activities for cancer based charities, bringing the grant total to $9,312.00.

Peninsula Health Chemo/Oncology Day Unit Nurse Unit Manager Joan Thomas said it was a pleasure to receive the donation on behalf of Peninsula Health.

“Thank you so much to Lifestyle Communities Hastings for all of your hard work and effort, we really appreciate it –what you’ve done is just phenomenal.” Joan Thomas said.
