This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the incredible bonds between mothers and their children across our health service, shining a light on these relationships and the dedication they bring to their roles every day.

We asked them: What’s the most rewarding part of sharing your workplace with your mother/child?”

Here’s what they had to say.

Mother and Son

Nirmal, Registered Nurse and Sugandhi, Associate Nurse Unit Manager

“When I began my nursing career as a graduate, whenever I had questions and didn’t want to ask anyone else, I could always ask her. She could relate to the stories I told and understand my concerns better than the rest of the family,” says Nirmal.

“I still remember Nirmal as a little boy, coming along with his dad to drop me off at work, saying that he wanted to work with Mum when he grew up. To see him back in the same organisation as a student nurse, then a graduate nurse, and now a fully qualified Registered Nurse—making his childhood wish come true—is an incredible feeling,” says Sugandhi.

Mother and Son

Tom, Patient Services Assistant Supervisor and Roma, Personal Assistant

“It means a lot working with Mum. I can chat to her and relate to her based on the events of the day. It’s nice seeing your mum—especially when she shouts me a coffee!” says Tom.

“It helps you understand the other person’s role, and it’s always nice to bump into each other in the corridor when you’re not expecting it. We’ve also got to know each other’s work colleagues and friends, which I think has brought us closer,” says Roma.

Mother and Son in Law

Lisa, Anaesthetic Research Nurse and Matthew, Clinical Support Nurse

“We often have regular catch-ups in the corridor, which has allowed us to develop a stronger personal and professional relationship. I’ve always had great respect for Matt as a nurse and am proud of what he’s achieved over the years. Working in close proximity allows me to see this firsthand,” says Lisa.

“Lisa has been an invaluable resource in navigating my role within the organisation. Although she works in a separate area, being involved with Peninsula Health throughout her career means she knows who to contact within the organisation when something is needed. She’s also helped with my own development as a senior nurse within the organisation,” says Matt.

Mother and Daughter

Isobel, Registered Nurse and Zoe, Clinical Support Nurse

“My daughter inspires me every day with all her achievements, and as a parent, I couldn’t be prouder. Working together means we can have lunch together—as Isobel doesn’t live at home, I get to see her more often,” says Zoe.

“I’ve always been inspired by my mum. She’s worked so hard to get where she is as a Clinical Support Nurse. Working together means we can debrief about work—it’s nice having someone to chat to who understands what I’m talking about and helps put things into a different perspective,” says Isobel.

Mother and Daughter

Kaylene, Enrolled Nurse and Amanda, Operations Team Leader

“Long ago, I encouraged Amanda to pursue an office administration traineeship with Peninsula Health. She flourished and has since worked in many roles, completed various certificates, and excelled in managing work teams—displaying strong leadership. Along the way, we’ve shared and discussed our own working life perspectives, creating a deeper respect for our very different roles,” says Kaylene.

“I was always inspired to join healthcare because of my mum’s long-standing career helping others. I’m proud to work for an organisation that supports families working in the same industry. Although we’re in very different roles, our primary goal is the same—to ensure internal and external stakeholders receive the best service possible,” says Amanda.

Mother and Daughter

Emma, Endorsed Enrolled Nurse and Sarah, Registered Nurse

“Emma was born at Rosebud Hospital. I felt quite emotional when she was doing a clinical placement in the very ward where she came into this world. It’s great to see Emma exploring the different areas she can pursue as a nurse throughout her career—especially as the service is growing rapidly,” says Sarah.

“Working for the same organisation as my mum creates a sense of familiarity and shared purpose, as we’re both dedicated to delivering compassionate, high-quality care. Witnessing her commitment has been truly inspiring and reinforces my own values as a nurse,” says Emma.

Mother and Son

Luke, Patient Services Assistant Supervisor and Rosie, Payroll Services Officer

“Working at the same organisation keeps us in touch, as I get to see Luke each week on his way to night shift—usually for dinner. Having your mum’s knowledge of awards is a bonus as well!” says Rosie and Luke.

Mother, Son and Daughter

Jason, Patient Services Assistant, Michelle, Enrolled Nurse and Jade, Registered Nurse

“Working for the same organisation as my son and daughter makes me feel very proud. Although we have different roles, as a mother I’m extremely pleased that they’ve followed me into the healthcare profession. We often find ourselves offering each other support and advice on various aspects of our work. We’re always there for each other,” says Michelle.

“Following in Mum’s footsteps by working as a nurse for Peninsula Health, I often find myself debriefing with her after shifts, which can be very cathartic. She also gives me advice on how to approach challenging patients or how to deal with the lifestyle of working night shifts,” says Jade.

“It’s great that we can offer each other support, and Mum gives me a chance to grow through her professionalism and expertise. Her help and advice have been invaluable over the years,” says Jason.

Wishing a heartfelt Happy Mother’s Day to the amazing families of Peninsula Health and our broader community. Your love, dedication, and support inspire us every day.
